Mauritius currency system

The currency that is used in Mauritius is called the rupee and is denoted by the symbol 'Rs'.For example an article that cost twenty rupees will be denoted as Rs 20.One Mauritian rupee is made up of 100 cents. The Mauritius currency system consist of notes( Rs 25,Rs 50,Rs 100,Rs 200,Rs 500,Rs 1000,Rs 2000) and coins(5 cents,10 cents,20 cents,50 cents, Rs 1,Rs 5,Rs 10).

Banking system

Mauritius has a good, reliable and dynamic banking system that will allow you to exchange your currencies into Mauritian rupee. Major Banks have a dedicated counter to exchange your foreign currency with the exchange rate clearly displayed. Other smaller banks will also exchange your foreign currency when you show them to the teller. Once you are at the airport you will have a chance to exchange your money with the bank. Alternatively there are also private money exchangers that are available on the island such as Thomas Cook and will provide also good and reliable service.

Opening Hours of Banks

The majority of banks in Mauritius open at 09 00 to 15 15 on Monday to Thursday and 09 00 to 15 30 on Fridays. Banks are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. The only exception being the Mauritius Commercial Bank which is opened on Friday from 09 00 to 17 00.

Other means of Payments

Mauritius has also a good network of (Automated Teller Machine) ATMs that will accept all the major credit and debit cards. Visa Cards, Maestro Cards, Master Cards, American Express and Diners Club are all accepted by banks and restaurants assuring you that you will always have a way to carry your money. Additionally all major restaurants and shopping centers accept payments by credit cards. Travelers checks are also accepted by banks and hotels and can be exchanged on the island. Western Union and Moneygramm transfer are also available on the island to provide you with other opportunities to receive and send money.

The Mauritius currency system is a well developed one and should not provide a lot of problem for visitors.
